It’s been more than 6 years that I’ve been dabbling with photography in general. For the last 3 years, I’ve been focusing extensively on the Indian wedding photography scene since I love to capture those moments of love, irritation (thanks to the glaring lights, crowd, and heat). I’d even watch fleeting glimpses of disappointment, sadness, and lost-love looks, and a mixture of emotions on the bride, bridegroom, and their parents.
For me, it’s all about catching those moments with my camera. While not all those photos will ever be used, it’s just that capture that keeps me ticking. As a professional, my output – as far as the photos are concerned – are primarily the happy ones. I often hear people say, “Call some photographer for the wedding; we need the cheapest one possible”. That approach is wrong. Here’s why:
Wedding is a one-time event; money is the moot point
Professional, high-talented and creative wedding photographers in India are rare to find. You really have a few people (count on your fingers, and you’ll still be left with some fingers free) who are professional, available, and creative enough. Professional wedding photographers don’t just take photos; they capture moments that last a lifetime. They bring out little quirks in our expressions that would have otherwise been missed. For an event like an Indian wedding, money is the moot point. In fact, the cost of a wedding photographer in India is peanuts compared to the other stuff you’d spend on.
Do you need albums or memories?
A friend of mine got married a couple of years ago and did the big mistake of asking around for a photographer who’d be a friend of a friend of a friend. As you can guess, the choice was a complete disaster and he still doesn’t have any wedding photos or engagement pictures to show. How embarrassing is that? I am not saying that word of mouth doesn’t work; it does. 70% of my business comes from word-of-mouth. All I am saying is that, check out his or her portfolio no matter how you get introduced to a wedding photographer. Do some research and have no qualms about making your decisions. It’s a marriage, for heaven’s sake; not some picnic.
You get what you pay for
Think about this for a second: if you look for a cheap wedding photographer in India for marriages, you are like to get an amateur photographer with a normal, cell-phone camera or borrowed equipment at best. Do you want to trust an amateur photographer for an important event like a marriage? Professional photographers – whether they do travel photography, take wedding photographs for Indians, or whether they work for websites and magazines – invest a lot in their equipment. They spend years honing their craft. They invest in software such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Light box. None of that comes cheap.
Contact me if you need help with photos for your wedding, Sangeet, Engagement, etc. I am here to serve you.
The big fat Indian Wedding was never an easy event to manage, was it? Too many variables, absolute chaos, people milling around, and we poor Indian photographers have to scuttle around with our equipment in tow.
